NEW YORK STATE -- A winter weather advisory will be in effect for our area through Tuesday morning and while more snow is on the way, a new study suggests nine out of 10 drivers are not as prepared as they should be for a roadside emergency.

Insurance agents suggest keeping a first aid kit, water, blankets, a flashlight and road flares in your trunk. It's also a good idea keep an extra set of gloves, a hat and a scarf just in case you do get stranded.

If you find yourself in a position where you can't move your car, experts say you shouldn't sit in the car and continually run the engine. Instead, run it for a few minutes every so often and then turn it off to conserve fuel.

"You can get stranded on even the shortest trip. The trip to the grocery store or the shopping center, when all of a sudden, you need jumper cables and you don't have them," Dan Loggins, a State Farm agent, said.

"You don't want to just pack an emergency supply kit for a winter storm. You do want to have one in your car for a daily basis," meteorologist Matt Morano said.

It's also recommend that when you're getting your oil changed, have your mechanic check out your spare tire to make sure it's in good shape.

You should also keep your gas tank at least half-full during the cold months, so you don’t run out of gas in an emergency. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
