There's a new addition to the staff at the University at Albany: The president. Our Vince Gallagher was there for his first day on campus and has more.

ALBANY, N.Y. -- And it's official. After getting his photo taken and receiving his SUNY identification card, Dr. Robert Jones officially became the University at Albany's new president.
"We're very excited about this leadership opportunity and we're just anxious to get started to listen and to learn," said Dr. Robert Jones.

"To listen and to learn" was a phrase Dr. Jones had repeatedly mentioned, almost becoming a new theme for his first official day.

"It's the beginning of an ongoing process of listening and having dialogues with people inside the university and our external partners as well as we shape a compelling vision for the future," he said.

Jones was appointed to president in September 2012 following a search that attracted candidates nationwide. He recently served as senior vice president for academic administration at the University of Minnesota. Now, he's getting a warm welcome on his move to Albany.
"I'm very excited about the new president, I'm very active on campus, so I'm so excited to meet him and interact and hopefully it will be a great year," said Jenny Alweiss, UAlbany student.

"He looks very excited, very approachable...I know a couple of people have already had meetings with him despite the fact that today is his first day, and it's nice that we have someone we can reach out to," said Keith Rosenblum, UAlbany recent graduate.

Jones talked about forming a partnership with other university officials and touched upon SUNY Chancellor's Nancy Zimpher's recent "State of SUNY" address.

"All the way from online education to Tech Smart to the whole nine yards and so we're very excited about being a key partner with the chancellor and advancing the entire system,” said Dr. Jones.

Jones says to stay tuned for future education goals as he begins his tenure as the University's 19th president. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
