Buying a vehicle for your newly licensed daughter can be stressful. One Saugerties car dealer helped one father through the process. As YNN's Elaina Athans tells us, he wasn't working with everyday Joe Schmoe. Instead, he cut a deal with a political powerhouse.
SAUGERTIES, N.Y. -- Bob Siracusano owns Sawyer Motors in Saugerties. He has been selling cars for 22 years, made thousands of deals, but never had a client quite like his recent one.
Siracusano took out an ad on eBay a month ago to sell a restored 1996 Ford Bronco. He got a hit. An interested buyer called. One who has quite a bit of political clout.
“He says 'You’re speaking to Governor Cuomo.' And I said you mean Andrew Cuomo?” said Siracusano.
The business owner was instantly put into the position of trying to haggle with the head of New York State and trying to set up a 'go see' with a man who's got a lot going on.
"He says Monday’s not good. I have to go to Washington to try and get billions of dollars for Sandy," said Siracusano.
Siracusano explained that Cuomo was looking for something for precious cargo. His teenage daughter just got her license.
"He was looking for that certain kind of car and we had that certain kind of car," said Siracusano.
Siracusano says for some time, the governor was calling and even texting him asking questions about the vehicle and also making some other interesting inquires not typically asked of a car salesman.
"Are you Republican or Democrat? And I’m saying to myself, why would you say something like that," said Siracusano.
He told Cuomo he votes on people, not parties, and apparently the answer was good enough.
Cuomo purchased the Bronco for his daughter. Not exactly a sporty or sassy vehicle for a sixteen-year-old, but it’s safe.
"You got a lot of protection there," he said.
As far as what the 'online looking' governor paid, this dealer isn't saying.
"He got a real good deal," said Siracusano.
And it's a deal not soon to been forgotten.
Sawyer Motors holds a car show in Saugerties every year. Thousands of people go and this summer, it’ll be held July 6th and 7th. Siracusano invited the governor and gave him tickets to the show, but he hasn't heard yet if Cuomo will attend.
