This year, it seems like winter is back to being cold and snowy. It's the kind of weather that's bringing smiles to the faces of those associated with Orange County's Winter Sports Park. YNN's Christian Farrell has more on the park's upcoming opening weekend.
MONTGOMERY, N.Y. -- It looks like it could be the view from some Vermont ski lodge. But it actually isn't. It's the view from the lodge overlooking Orange County's Winter Sports Park in Montgomery. The park is set to open on Friday.
"Orange County Snow Tubing Park is a nice park. It's an 800 foot hill. I think the best thing about it is we have a run-off. You can go forever. It's like old-fashioned tobogganing and sledding. You can just keep on going until you stop. So that's kind of the beauty of the park," said parks supervisor Tom Quinlisk.
In addition to the snow tubing, which does include a fee, other park attractions include free sleigh riding, ice skating and cross country skiing.
While the county's winter sports park did open last year, due to the mild winter, there was more grass visible than snow. But that's certainly not the case now.
A couple of winter storms have created ideal winter park conditions. But that doesn't stop snow machines from continuing to work on building a bigger snow base.
"The staff up here at the park, when we have a winter that's really not a winter, it's no fun for us. We'd much rather see snow, nice, cold temperatures and the families up here. It's a lot of fun when they come up," said Quinlisk.
Park officials say if the weather cooperates, they hope to keep the park open into March.
