The holiday season can be joyous, but sometimes stressful. The same can be said for our animal companions. YNN’s Alexandra Weishaupt has more on how owners are spreading some cheer to their pets.

KINGSTON, N.Y. -- Santas of all ages make that last minute shopping spree for their other family members.

“I have two Rottweilers and they’re like my fourth and fifth kid,” said Peter Morreale.

Many are packing area pet shops to provide their four-legged companions some holiday cheer.

Robert Lawrence’s old English Setter’s tail will be wagging when he sees what Santa brought in.

“I got him an orthopedic bed and a whole bunch of stocking stuffers,” said Robert Lawrence.

Not only will the pooches receive the royal treatment, but cat lovers are embracing the holiday as well. And while it’s all fun and festive, veterinarians say the extra hustle and bustle around the holidays can actually be trying on family pets.

“Separation anxiety is a big problem in general and then you just magnify it during the holiday time. Same things that happen to people happen to pets,” said Dr. Arnold Rugg, Kingston Animal Hospital.

Dr. Rugg says pets become out of sorts when their routine is changed. He also says people should beware of pets eating Christmas decorations or the wrong holiday food.

“Chocolate, raisins, grapes. Those are all poisonous to dogs and cats,” said Rugg.

Rugg says if you're boarding your pet, make sure to pick a reputable place and don't forget to stop and give them a little extra attention.

“Pets are like people, they have their moments, they just want a little bit of love, that’s all,” said Morreale.
