Jury selection is underway in the retrial of Edward McDonough, the Rensselaer County Democratic Board of Elections Commissioner accused of forging ballots in the 2009 Troy City Council election. Megan Cruz has more from the Rensselaer County Courthouse.

TROY, N.Y. -- Jury selection is underway for the retrial of Rensselaer County Elections Commissioner Edward McDonough. He faces charges in the Troy voter fraud case that ended in a mistrial earlier this year.

That first trial ended back in March. McDonough was one of two defendants being accused of forging ballots to secure the Working Families Line for the Democrats in the 2009 Troy City Council elections. The trial made news for nine long weeks, especially when after all that, the jury said they were hopelessly deadlocked. The judge then called a mistrial, ordered a new trial, and that's where we are now.

Today is the first day of jury selection. Hundreds have been summoned. Those selected will determine whether McDonough is guilty of over 70 felony counts of second-degree forgery and possession of a forged instrument.

McDonough had a co-defendant in the first trial. That was Michael LoPorto, a former city councilman. He was retried first, and in July, he was acquitted of similar charges.
