ALBANY, N.Y. -- People gathered this Veterans Day at the U.S.S. Slater in Albany for a special observance ceremony in honor of the holiday. The public and Slater volunteers were joined by Senator Neil Breslin and Assemblyman Bob Reilly.

The U.S.S. Slater in the last World War II destroyer escort afloat in America. Hundreds like her served in World War II and wars after, protecting convoys of troops and supplies. In honor of the soldiers who served on those ships, military personnel aboard the ship fired a three-gun salute.

"We commemorate our wars, we surely don't celebrate them. But, we celebrate the honor and the dedication to bravery of the individuals who put their lives on hold and their lives on the line, and in some cases pay extraordinary prices from the extreme sacrifices, the lives greatly diminished through the wounds felt in battle," said Assemblyman Jack McEneny.

The ship will remain open until 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, and will be open to the public again Monday. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
