Did you join the masses and vow to get in shape this year? Well, if you did, that's not news. As our Erin Vannella tells us, it's annual annoyance for those who don't wait until the new year to work out.

CAPITAL REGION, N.Y. -- Typical, week-one chatter at the gym...

"Uh my new year's resolution is to get toned," said Albany resident Nicole Wenz.

"Hopefully I'll stick with it and look good next year," said Albany resident Mike Ruane.

It's happened again. Gym crowds multiply with newbies starting 2011 on the right foot.

"People are getting yearly memberships because they are really motivated," said Best Fitness Fitness Councilor Desmond Biechman. "They really get in here, really put an effort into it to prolong their life pretty much."

Healthy ideas are all well and good, but those who are new to the gym sort of stick out as a problem to those who have been here for years.

"Right now it's kind of annoying," said Latham resident Will Collins. "How do you say it? Share machines?"

That's it, Collins and his crew say they have to exercise patience between sets to give the newbies their space.

"They're sitting there talking about what they did last year," said Collins, "still trying to get in shape for later on this summer, but it's not going to happen."

And that's because?

"Two weeks or so they're going to fall off the map," said Collins. "They'll be back right before spring time, but you can't get in shape that fast."

Ok, so retention rates aren't high, but how about an "A" for effort?

"I mean I respect them for coming in and trying," said Collins. "I just wish they'd stick with it so I get used to the traffic."

Come on, are you going to take that, newbies? You're committed right?

"Yea," said Wenz. "So far it's good."

"Oh I'm definitely sticking with it," said Ruane.

"Give it a month or so," said Collins. "Everybody will be gone and we'll be back to normal and then we can work out like we want to."

Oh well, no shame in trying. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
